Background to Edward Hogan: Edward Hogan joined the Royal Navy as a boy 3rd Class aboard the HMS Courageux. The 74-gun, third-rate vessel was engaged in the famous ‘Strachan's Action’ fought off Finistarre, where the remainder of the French fleet was destroyed. For his service during this action, Hogan subsequently received the Naval General Service Medal, 1793-1840, with clasp ‘4 Novr 1805;’ 30 of these clasps were issued to the crew of HMS Courageux. Hogan was later aboard the HMS Minden at Java, at which time he held the rank of Ordinary Seaman.
Provenance: The NGS Medal sold through Glendinnings in November 1907 (Lot 491), and was later a part of the well known Stansfield Collection. The Medal was sold through Dix Noonan Webb, (December 2004).
Additional information: It is believed Edward Hogan was also elligible for the 'Java' clasp. However, due to his name being incorrectly placed to the Java Roll as Hagan, it is believed he received another medal bearing the name Edward Hagan, with a 'Java' clasp.
