Sniper's Badge 1st Class | Ex.Col.Dodkins' Collection.
Sniper's Badge 1st Class for sale. This badge, from the famous Col.Dodkins' collection, is finely made with multi-coloured yarns, including light green oakleaves, with black coloured eagle and red beak, all completed onto a dark green wool oval. The central design within a small oval of light green yarn, and with an outer edge of golden wire. Reverse complete with typical paper type backing in place.
Condition report: Close to mint condition with storage age only.
Provenance: Acquired by Col.Dodkins in 1945 / 1946, whilst he was in Germany working in Intelligence. The badge remaining within the Dodkins Collection until 1984, at which time the collection was sold though the auction house, Wallis & Wallis. The badge held within one collection since that time until consigned to ULRIC of ENGLAND.
Note: The Sniper's Badge was instituted on the 20th August 1944. There were three grades. The 1st Class with a surround of golden wires. The 2nd Class with a surround of silver wires, and the 3rd Class without a wire border. Only those members of the armed forces actually employed as snipers , were eligible for this award.
Additional notes: Due to fact this was a late institution of the award, very few applications had gone through the administrative system and been awarded to individuals before the war ended. An item of extreme rarity.
