1796 Pattern Cavalry Sword. Henry Osborn. Cutler To The King
A fine and scarce 1796 pattern Penninsular / Waterloo period Cavalry sword by Henry Osborn. Cutler to the King, Osborn was instrumental in designing the 1796 pattern light & heavy cavalry swords. This particular light cavalry sword has a typical 1796 pattern hilt assembly, in steel with leather & wire-bound wooden grip (some few woodworm holes present). The blade is in excellent overall condition, with 98% polished steel finish. The obverse with an owner's cartouche bearing the stylised initials 'LM', and the reverse with large cartouche bearing florette scrolls with designation 'Osborns Warranted'.
Condition report: The metal scabbard is in excellent condition. Both the steel hilt assembly and the scabbard have a beautiful darkened age patina.
Date reference: This sword was made by Osborn, before the company began to trade under the name'Osborn & Gunby.' Therefore, the date of manufacture is between 1796 and 1807.
