Napoleonic Royal Navy / Merchant Officer Sword - Circa: 1786
Napoleonic period Royal Navy / Merchant Officer sword for sale. The gilted hilt with stepped pommel, and straight drop. The pommel with proud tang, and the grip, again very typical for this style of sword, in reeded black ebony. The lower hilt section with cut out diamond emblem. The blade plain. The scabbard in black leather, and with three mercuric gilted brass decorative mounts, the upper two with suspension rings. The leather scabbard shell with fine impressed decoration.
Condition report: The hilt assembly with the mercuric gilt finish mostly gone. The reeded black ebony grip free from damage and in particularly good condition for this type of sword. The blade generally bright, but with some areas of greying. Free from any major pitting. The scabbard leather surviving in a good state. Much of the original impressed decorative work to the scabbard shell is also present. The scabbard mounts with most mercuric gilt now gone. The hilt assembly and sbabbard mounts matching in patination.
Note: According to Sim Comfort in his excellent publication, Naval Swords & Dirks, he states that the black reeded grip could denote either a Warrant Officer in the Royal Navy, or an officer on a Merchant ship (page 122).
