Condition report: The NGS medal in overall excellent condition with good clear naming and contemporary silk ribbon. Soward's name is unique to the Roll.
Note: Edward Soward was born in the village of Hillinghain, Maldon, Essex. Soward enlisted into the Royal Marines on 24th August 1835. He served on HMS Asia between 26th March 1836 and 10th April 1841, and took part in the bombardment of Syria (giving Soward entitlement to the Naval General Service Medal with Syria clasp).
From 4th September 1841 to 24th December 1844 Soward was aboard the HMS Formidable. From 25th December 1844 to 10th September 1846 the HMS Orestes, and from 12th December 1849 to 13th December 1851 the HMS Phaeton. It was while serving on the HMS Phaeton that Soward was given a certificate of good conduct from the ships Captain, George Elliott (son of Admiral Sir George Elliott KCB). In 1851 Soward was discharged from the Royal Navy on account of contracting tuberculosis during his service abroad.
