In addition to the medal group, the sale includes the 'Share Your Sorrow' medal entitlement citation with Harrington's name in typed form, Sergeant Harrington's brass, RAF cap badge and photocopied documents.

Condition report: The box and medals in excellent to near mint condition. The citation with typical folds. The RAF cap badge heavily polished, and now dulled with age.

Note: Flight Sergeant William Walter Harrington joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 460 Squadron, at the point of its formation in 1941. 460 Squadron was a heavy bomber squadron equipped with Wellingtons, and was made up as a multi-national unit, albeit, primarily Australian.

460 Squadron participated in the raid against the city of Enden in 1942, using Wellington planes, but by the following year (1943) was re-equipped with Lancasters. On the night of 2/3 December 1943, 460 Squadron saw action over Berlin. The Germans correctly identified the sortie was making for Berlin, and released some of their best fighter units to engage the bombers. No less than 40 bombers were shot down that night, including the Lancaster with Flight Dergeant Harrington aboard. Flight Sergeant Harrington is remembered on panel 137 of the Runnymeade Memorial.

Additional notes: 460 Squadron continued to fly sorties over Berlin during early 1944, and then took part in the many sorties supporting the lead up to the D-Day landings. The squadron made their final raid of WW2, bombing Hitler's mountain retreat of Bertchesgaden.

Most notably, 460 Squadron flew more sorties than any other Australian bomber squadron, and dropped more tonnage than any other squadron in the RAF.
