Background to Newton: Born in the parish of Chatherton, in the county of Lancaster, Newton was a weaver by trade. He enlisted  at Plymouth, Devon, on 20th October 1809. Newton served with his regiment for 20 years and 240 days, and took part in the Battle of Waterloo. The Roll states Newton remained in France (Cambrai)  until 1816. Newton was discharged on 21st May  1828 in consequence of being unfit for further service.

Background to 3rd Batt. Grenadier Guards at Waterloo: At Quatre Bras, Lord Saltoon's Light Company was helping to defend the chateau of Hougoumont, along with the light companies of the 1st Foot Guards, and the Coldstream Guards. Throughout the day, the defenders frustrated the attacks of over 30,000 Frenchmen. Ian Fletcher quotes in Wellington's Regiments:

'probably the gallantry of the defenders of this post has never been surpased on any battlefield.'
