Waterloo Medal for sale to Private Mark Pyke, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, (23rd Regiment Foot). The Royal Welsh Fusilier Waterloo Medal is in excellent overall condition, with good definition remaining, and particularly clear naming. The Waterloo campaign Medal retains the original steel clip and ring suspension.
Background: Pyke enrolled as a private with the Berkshire Militia on 2nd September 1808, and then on 21st May 1813 transfered to the 23rd regiment Foot (Royal Welsh Fusiliers). The regiment were shipped to Flanders in March 1815, and took part in the Battle of Waterloo. On 18th June, the 23rd suffered from enemy artillery fire all day resulting in 4 officers and 11 men killed, and 7 officers and 78 men wounded; Colonel Sir Henry Ellis, was mortally wounded whilst cheering on his men from the centre of the battalion's square.
The 23rd entered Paris on 1st July 1815, and remained in France until 1918. During this period, Pyke contracted fever, which led to consistent epileptic fits. He was invalided to Chatham and finally discharged from the Army on 25th November 1818 as a result of his health.
